Assignments

Here is where I put my class assignments. Most of them took multiple class periods to complete.

Wintertime Deer (all 3 takes)

First, I sketched out what the print would look like, then I traced it onto patti paper, and rubbed that onto a nylon block. I then carved that out along the lines, and rolled paint onto it, then I stamped that print onto a piece of paper.

The process took around 3 weeks to complete.

Hypothetical Business Card Design

Nylon Block Print

Made with Photoshop

For this assignment, we studied the ins and outs of designing a good business card.

Stipple Art (Edited with Photoshop)

These were photos of myself I splashed with the Photoshop paint bucket tool on every surface. We were studying color theory at the time, which I found enjoyable to learn.

For the one of the right, I went for a color scheme that was mostly black with splashes of bright colors, which I feel represents me better as a person, and an analogous color scheme for the one of the left, which is definitely more detailed, but doesn't really hit the same way.

I finished it within the class period.

This was for my graphic design class's 2023 calendar, put on the month of October.

First, I sketched out what the design would look like, then I used a fine tipped sharpie to outline it, and apply texture and shading by the stippling method, which I found to be a very effective method to use. I then scanned it onto Photoshop to make necessary edits and add the background.

This took about 3 weeks to complete.

Out of thirty something students, only twelve were voted onto the calendar, so I'm pretty proud of this one.

California Postcard

Postcart Project.png

Made with Adobe Illustrator

We were given a postcard template, and each picked a place to do, as long as it has something to do with your heritage (read my bio.)

I shaped each tree individually, which took up most of the time, but it only took about a week to finish the whole thing.

The animal silhouette project was also done on Illustrator. We all picked an animal to portray, and a color scheme to focus on.

It was meant to be pretty abstract, but mine turned out to be one of the more "real" looking ones, as I added in a mountain range, and sunset gradients.

Remembering the rule of thirds was useful here.

It only took about a week to finish.

Music Lyrics Poster

For this assignment, we had to pick a meaningful song, and make a poster with a few of its' lyrics. Since all my favorite songs have some deep level of meaning, it was a little difficult to choose, but I eventually settled on Natural by Imagine Dragons. This one set of lyrics made me think of something to do with war, and the present generation being haunted by atrocities of the past.

I went completely complimentary, using opposites whenever I could, which I found made the piece a lot more powerful.

Since I decided to hand draw everything, including the lyrics, this project took a whole month to complete, I learned a LOT about working with of Adobe Illustrator, and I received credit for constructing my own font (which was supposed to be a separate assignment). I was partially inspired by Wes Wilson's font style.

Inspirational Stickers

Here, we all had to make a set of related stickers. I chose meaningful sayings from various media. Credits go to Imagine Dragons' Demons, Beth Crowley's Battle Cry, The Beatles' All You Need Is LoveOpen Up Your Eyes from the My Little Pony Movie (hey, it's a badass song!), and a well known quote from Sandlot.

We learned what it takes for a sticker to be properly made, including legible type, and a clear outline around each sticker as well as space for cutting them out.

The brainstorming period really took the longest here, but it only took one or two weeks to finish the whole thing.

2 Page Magazine Layout Design

Made with Adobe Illustrator

We were assigned to both design a magazine article and write it. Most other students took photos to go with their articles, but since it's kind of hard to take good photos of the stars without a special camera, I made graphic visuals of each constellation. We learned about what makes a good magazine layout, putting emphasis on space and color, as well as how to lead the eye around the article without having any one element be too distracting from the whole.

Human Faces Assignment

Made with a #2 pencil and colored pencils.

For this assignment, I was kind of on the fence about whether to do a realistic human face, or a comic strip. I just decided to do both. I learned how to use proper shading techniques to make a face realistic, and it ended up improving my face art a great deal. (If you go to Extra Art under the About Me tab, the improvement is visible.) This comic strip I came up with features a dragon who was the supreme ruler of his homeland, but after a coup, found himself exiled to an entirely different realm; the human realm, where he has to adjust to their way of life, making for some rather humorous scenes. Extra comics may be found under the Sketchbook tab.
